DETAMC'S NAME RESTORED
In 2003-2004, the City of Wichita refused to pay George and Pam Johnson more than $50,000 that was due to DETAMC under various contracts with the City. The sole reason that the City refused was based on an "audit" conducted by City officials that claimed that DETAMC committed fraudulent acts against the City. After the City's allegations drove DETAMC out of business, the city claimed the company owed it more than $200,000 in taxpayer funds. After a six day trial, a Kansas City, Kansas jury ordered the City to pay more than $50,000 to George and Pamela Johnson, the owners of Diversified Educational Training and Manufacturing Co., or DETAMC. In doing so, the jury unanimously found that DETAMC did not commit any fraud and performed under the contract. The jury rejected any notion that DETAMC owed the City any money. However, the jury did not find that the reason for the City's actions was because of the race of George and Pam Johnson, African-American.
